About the Organizing Manager Role
Sister District Project (SDP) seeks an Organizing Manager (OM) who takes initiative, builds strong relationships, and leads with clarity and purpose. The OM will lead SDP’s volunteer phonebank program, strengthen and support existing Sister District teams, and drive the creation of new teams across the country. They will provide strategic coaching, program management, and day-to-day guidance to ensure volunteer leaders are equipped to meet ambitious goals and sustain long-term impact. This role is part of an Organizing Department that values excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Together, the team works to win elections, support state legislative candidates, and build the progressive infrastructure needed for lasting change.
Responsibilities:
- Coach and Develop Existing Leaders and Affiliates ( 30%)
Manage a portfolio of priority volunteer teams and affiliates to increase volunteer capacity and maximize field and fundraising support for endorsed candidates.
Develop organizing and fundraising plans for each team in OM portfolio. Includes detailed strategies, tactics, and timelines for meeting quantitative and qualitative goals as well as sustainable team and affiliate growth.
Support methods may include: creating and editing customized tools and scripts; tactical planning; coaching on volunteer leader development and ladder of engagement; assisting with building and recruiting for fundraising and direct voter contact events; developing and supporting cross-departmental initiatives to increase engagement, and supporting collaboration and community building within and across teams.
Report to HOO on progress-to-goal for each team and affiliate.
Help plan and co-host monthly volunteer leader calls and annual leadership workshops focused on providing resources and guidance to leaders on best organizing practice throughout the cycle.
Co-lead volunteer education efforts in collaboration with the Political Department and HOO. - Develop Growing Teams and Recruit New Affiliates (20%)
Lead recruitment efforts to start and grow new volunteer teams in targeted areas using SDP volunteer recruitment resources and organizing best practices.
Provide hands-on support to new volunteer teams including leadership development, recruitment support, event planning, fundraising, and field activities.
Possibly hire and manage one part time, on the ground Organizing Fellow who will be responsible for building a new volunteer team in a targeted area.
Conduct outreach to grassroots groups in targeted areas to recruit new Sister District affiliates. - Lead Sister District Phonebank Program (30%)
Lead at least one 2 hour National Phonebank for Sister District candidates each week, providing additional phonebank hosting support as needed
Develop National Phonebank materials, including one-pagers, guides, and training slides
Manage recruitment for National Phonebanks in collaboration with other OMs through texting platforms, Fellow recruitment calls, following up with phonebank sign ups, and managing National Phonebank Mobilize listing
Monitor Phonebank Program data and bottomline weekly National Phonebank report for volunteers
Collaborate with HOO on bi-weekly communications to Sister District Phonebank Leaders
Bottomline planning and execution of Phonebank Leader Calls, to include drafting agendas, promoting call to leaders, and following up with attendees & signups
Edit and update program documents, including the Sister District Phonebank Leaders Guide, and Guide for Phonebankers
Develop and manage GOTV National Phonebank schedule in coordination with HOO
Hire, train, and manage a cohort of up to four National Phonebank Hosts - Hire & Manage Remote Organizing Fellows (10%)
Direct the volunteer outreach work of up to four Organizing Fellows each year to accomplish goals related to priority teams and team/affiliate growth.
Coach direct-report Fellows to meet quantitative and qualitative goals
Support collaboration between direct-report Fellows and high priority volunteer teams
Develop and implement phonebank training materials and programming for Organizing Fellows; collaborate with Program Manager re: continuing phonebank education for Fellows
Hold weekly 1:1 meetings and program reporting calls with direct-report Fellows, join and help run meetings with Organizing staff and all Fellows.
Support Fellow hiring process by conducting interviews and assisting in administrative support during Fellow candidate recruitment and onboarding
Support editing or creation of Fellowship onboarding and training materials, programmatic structure, and reporting documents as needed
Manage and conduct exit interviews with direct-report Fellows to gather insight into necessary program updates - Assist with the development of volunteer guides, templates, and other materials (5%)
Assist with the development of educational and training resources for volunteer leaders and public-facing events
Edit and upkeep department documents as needed - Perform additional duties as needed (5%)
Requirements
Must Haves:
2+ years of work experience, including:
At least 1 cycle of electoral organizing
Experience managing or supporting volunteer programs such as phonebanks or relational organizing programs. Proven ability to build strong, trust-based relationships and communicate with professionalism, kindness, and assertiveness.
Excellent critical thinking and problem solving skills and a solutions-oriented mindset, especially in light of new or ambiguous situations.
Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication, as well as exceptional customer service skills.
Demonstrated ability to successfully prioritize and manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment and across multiple departments.
Highly organized, detail-oriented, and goal driven, with strong follow-through and determination to meet ambitious outcomes.
Experience providing training, coaching, or facilitation to volunteer leaders and teams.
Self-starter and team player who is willing to sometimes work long, irregular hours (including nights and weekends), travel, and is energized by a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment
Demonstrated ability to work independently in a remote setting.
Multicultural competence, meaning the awareness, knowledge and skills needed to work with others who are culturally different from oneself in meaningful, relevant and productive ways.
