We are seeking a Controller to lead and execute the organization’s accounting function. This role combines hands-on accounting responsibility with leadership of accounting standards, workflows, and staff. The Controller owns monthly close, financial reporting, audit coordination, and the integrity of financial data while supervising accounting activities performed by administrative staff. This position focuses on stabilizing systems, improving consistency, and ensuring accurate, timely financial information in a complex grant-funded environment.
Job Duties and Core Responsibilities
Hands-On Accounting Ownership
Lead and actively participate in monthly close
Maintain general ledger accuracy and project coding structure
Perform or review reconciliations and journal entries
Ensure accurate grant revenue recognition
Accounting Leadership and Supervision
Supervise accounting workflows performed by administrative staff, including billing and receivables
Set expectations, timelines, and quality standards
Provide coaching and feedback, and potentially supervisory guidance
Establish close calendar and pacing
Financial Reporting and Board Financials
Prepare monthly financial statements for leadership and board of directors
Provide variance analysis and narrative context
Improve clarity and consistency of reporting
Audit Interface
Serve as primary liaison to external auditors
Prepare schedules and documentation
Maintain audit readiness year-round
Systems and Standards
Own chart of accounts and project structure in MIP
Establish and/or improve accounting SOPs
Strengthen internal controls
Improve coordination with Grant Administration Team
Cross-Functional Coordination
Partner with Administrative Director on AR, billing, and workflow coordination
Support leadership with financial visibility
Provide guidance to Grant Administration Team on financial processes
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications, Skills and Competencies
7+ years accounting experience
Demonstrated experience leading month-end close
Experience supervising accounting workflows or staff
Experience preparing financial statements and audit schedules
Strong proficiency with accounting software (experience with MIP strongly preferred)
Ability to work both strategically and hands-on
Preferred Qualifications, Skills and Competencies
Controller or senior accounting leadership experience
Nonprofit grant accounting or fund accounting
Experience improving systems and internal controls
Familiarity with federal Uniform Guidance
