Company History

Backcountry Medical Guides (BMG) was founded in 2010 by paramedic John Taussig in Santa Cruz, CA, with a simple mission: deliver accessible, high-quality wilderness medical training to individuals and communities who venture into remote environments. What began with a handful of WFA and WFR courses has grown into a West Coast organization offering sport-specific training programs in wilderness medicine, maritime medicine, ski/snowboard medicine, mountain bike medicine, and advanced CE/CME programming for medical professionals.
BMG formalized as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2017 and has since expanded across the Pacific Coast, including programs in the Pacific Northwest under its maritime division, Maritime Medical Guides. Throughout its growth, BMG has remained committed to experiential, community-oriented education that prepares students for a lifetime of adventure in the outdoors.
