Since 1972, LA County Health Services has been a cornerstone of care for one of the most vibrant, diverse, and dynamic communities in the world. Los Angeles County is home to people from every walk of life—newly arrived immigrants, multigenerational families, artists and entrepreneurs, students, working people, and global leaders. Our neighborhoods are shaped by cultures from around the world, expressed through the food, art, businesses, languages, and traditions that make Los Angeles unlike anywhere else.
At LA County Health Services, we understand that every patient brings a unique story, history, and set of challenges. As one of the nation’s largest municipal safety-net health systems, we provide compassionate, high-quality care regardless of a patient’s ability to pay, insurance status, housing situation, or immigration status. We are looking for people who value empathy, cultural understanding, and the opportunity to serve a community as complex and beautiful as Los Angeles itself.
Working here means joining people who care deeply about the health and well-being of our communities. From delivering exceptional clinical care to connecting patients with housing, behavioral health, and essential supports, our work reaches beyond the exam room. LA County Health Services offers the chance to build a meaningful career while helping ensure that every person—regardless of where they come from or what they are facing—has the dignity, respect, and care they deserve.
LA County Health Services has a long history of serving the people of Los Angeles County—one rooted in the belief that high-quality health care should be available to everyone. Its legacy reaches back to 1878, when the County opened a 100-bed hospital to care for residents who otherwise had limited access to medical services. In 1972, the County formally established the Department of Health Services by bringing together its hospitals, public health, mental health, and veterinary functions into a unified health-services system.
Over time, LA County Health Services evolved to meet the changing needs of one of the nation’s most diverse communities. In 2006, the County established a separate Department of Public Health, allowing Health Services to focus more directly on patient care through its hospitals, health centers, emergency services, and specialized programs. In 2011, the Department created its Ambulatory Care Network to strengthen primary care, improve coordination, and support a more patient-centered model of care.
The Department has continued to innovate in response to the needs of its communities. Housing for Health was established in 2013 to connect people experiencing homelessness and complex health conditions with supportive housing and clinical services. In 2014, My Health LA expanded access to primary care for low-income, uninsured immigrants who were excluded from public insurance coverage; over the next decade, the program served hundreds of thousands of County residents before its participants became eligible for full-scope Medi-Cal in 2024.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, LA County Health Services rapidly expanded virtual care, testing capacity, and other critical services, earning national recognition for innovative programs that supported patients, staff, and communities. In 2023, the County renamed LAC+USC Medical Center as Los Angeles General Medical Center—honoring its historic role while reaffirming its commitment to exceptional care and healthy communities.
Today, LA County Health Services continues to build on this history by advancing equitable, whole-person care for every community it serves. Its story is one of continual growth: responding to the challenges of each era while remaining grounded in compassion, public service, and the belief that every person deserves dignity and care.
Dr. Christina R. Ghaly has led LA County Health Services since 2017, advancing equitable, high-quality care for communities across Los Angeles County. Her leadership has helped strengthen clinical quality and timely access to care, guide the County’s health-system response during COVID-19, and expand innovative whole-person services for people experiencing homelessness. Recognized for public-sector leadership and innovation through the Innovate@UCLA Distinguished Executive Leadership Award and the County’s Chair Leadership Award for Department Heads.
